The Tohatsu MFS30D represents the pinnacle of lightweight outboard engineering, delivering robust 30 horsepower through its advanced 3-cylinder configuration while achieving the remarkable distinction of being the lightest weight 3-cylinder motor in its class. This innovative outboard features sophisticated battery-less Electronic Fuel Injection (EFI) technology with 30.5 cubic inch displacement, ensuring smooth operation, easier starting, and superior fuel efficiency throughout its 5,500-6,500 RPM operating range.
Revolutionary weight reduction engineering sets the MFS30D apart from all competitors in the 25/30hp category. Through comprehensive redesign of the crankshaft and intake manifold, Tohatsu engineers achieved remarkable component weight reductions of 37% and 48% respectively. This results in a total weight reduction of 30 pounds compared to the previous generation, making the MFS30D 19% lighter while improving reliability without sacrificing performance capabilities.
The heart of the MFS30D’s advanced performance lies in Simpliq™ Technology integration, which embodies Tohatsu’s technological philosophy of simplicity, interface, and quality. The optimized charging system features a best-in-class 17.5 amp high-output alternator, engineered with a new lightweight and compact water-cooled rectifier and stronger magnets on the magneto for enhanced electrical performance.
The newly designed gear case incorporates a torpedo-like shape for optimal hydrodynamic flow, reducing water drag and improving performance from planing to top-end speed. The strategic 2.17:1 gear ratio optimizes low-end torque while providing the ability to turn a wider variety of propellers for diverse boating applications. An auxiliary water intake port under the cavitation plate enhances cooling efficiency and reliability.
Advanced features include repositioned upper and lower mounts that reduce vibration for smoother operation, and a new flywheel design that generates improved airflow inside the cowling for enhanced cooling. The transparent fuel filter with floating indicator ring and tool-free quick drain valve provides convenient maintenance and water contamination detection.
Versatile applications make the MFS30D ideal for a wide variety of boat types including inflatables, RIBs, aluminum boats, FRP vessels, and pontoons. The optional Multi-Function Tiller Handle features unique four-step variable idle control from 750 to 1050 RPM, along with integrated stop switch, forward-neutral-reverse shifter, throttle friction adjustment, power trim & tilt switch, and electric start button on certain models. This comprehensive control system provides fingertip access to all essential functions with longer arm length for enhanced control.
At just 128 pounds for the short shaft and 129 pounds for the long shaft configuration, the MFS30D accommodates propellers from 6″ to 13″ pitch and is compatible with 15″ and 20″ transom heights.
